I Want

Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began! John 17:24

Wandering around Target seems to be a weekend tradition given the fact I live in suburbia as well as a house full of women. This weekend was no different. As I walked around I passed by the toy section. A toddler went up each aisle pointing to everything on the shelf and saying, "I want that.." and "I want this...".

The exasperated mom tried to remind the young boy he could only choose one item, which sent him over the edge due to his ever changing mind. He couldn't decide what he wanted the most. All options were on the table.

Contrast that picture in the middle of Target to the one that took place right before Jesus made His way to the cross. Today's passage is part of one of the final prayers Jesus uttered.

Knowing what awaited Him, we don't see a person whose mind is in a thousand different places. Jesus recognized what He wanted. His eyes focused on one goal: for us to be WITH Him.

In order to make His desire a reality, it would require Him to lay down His life, but that didn't matter to Him. In fact, Jesus went to the cross with joy. He knew His desire was worth the sacrifice.

Our desires reveal our heart.  The heart of Jesus was on full display here and it was consumed with the love He had for us. He could have had anything in the world, but to Him the choice was easy. It was us. The demonstration of His Love is the way we can once again be WITH God. God came to be WITH us, so we could be WITH Him.

  • How does it make you feel that Jesus' main desire is to be with you?

God, thank you for Your Son. I know it is only through Him that our relationship has been restored. His love and sacrifice give me access to You. I'm back where I belong and that is with You. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
