Shelter in the Storm

The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe. Proverbs 18:10

Insight

As the skies opened up, I resigned myself to the fact that I was more than likely going to die on The Beltway. I was on my way to visit my family in Maryland when a massive storm flooded the roads and provided zero visibility. Did I forget to mention this took place conveniently during rush hour traffic?

White knuckling the steering wheel, I managed to get off on an exit by the grace of God and pulled into a shopping center. We turned the car off and made a B-line to the first store for some safety. On that day, an Old Navy served as a strong fortress that provided my family cover from the storm. I'm embarrassed to admit, but I found comfort in those polos and khaki shorts that surrounded me.

Living in a broken world, at one time or another, we all face storms of a different kind. Unexpected news, trials, difficulties, broken relationships, just to name a few. We find ourselves at the end of our rope and in short supply of hope and direction. We don't know which way to turn.

King Solomon, the author of Proverbs, points those of us who are lost, hurt, and in despair in a direction. From his perspective, the name of the Lord provides those who run to it security and stability. No matter the storms that rage, a place of refuge exists for the weary and worn out.

God never promised storms wouldn't come our way; He declares to be a place of protection when the sky opens up.  The thunder may shake the ground, but it won't rattle our soul. Trusting in Him provides safety in fearful times. Feelings of anxiety and fear dissipate and get replaced with peace and love.

Yes, sometimes it takes a storm to recognize we need a shelter, but it doesn't have to be that way. Turning to God shouldn't be our last resort when our world gets turned upside down. He wants to be our hiding place with grey skies as well as picturesque sunsets. Run to Him today.

Reflection

·     Where do you need to trust that the name of the Lord is a strong fortress?

·     What would it look like to run to Him and seek protection from those circumstances?

Prayer

God, You shelter me amidst the storm. You cover me with grace when the world around me tries to battle my soul and discourage my spirit. I will rest in the security Your love provides. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
